JOB TITLE:  SEED PRODUCTION / CROP ADVISOR

The Seed Production / Crop Advisor will primarily be responsible to ensure implementation of Devolder Farms annual crop production plan by contracting required production acres with a number of seed growers to meet Devolder Farms high standards of quality.  This position may assist the President with Devolder Farms farm management and will support and assist with the sales of retail seed and crop inputs.  The Seed Production / Crop Advisor will always maintain professionalism, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity and work with team members and the public in a pleasant and positive manner. This position will maintain a high level of product and service knowledge as well as confidentiality. This role will also liaise with various stakeholders to ensure awareness of the incentives and promotions being offered and to provide agronomy advice and position solutions with clients to build long term relationships and high customer value.
The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Experience in agronomy, agriculture, business or related field.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of seed production business, including quality requirements and logistics.
  • General knowledge of production processing activities including conditioning, treating, packaging, warehouse and distribution.
  • Current knowledge of agronomic practices, government programs, environmental and safety regulation related to all phases of seed production.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to foster relationships. 
  • The ability to demonstrate professionalism and to work in a collaborative environment, advocating teamwork, training, safety, continuous improvement, and customer focused decision making.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, computer skills and a proven ability to prioritize, and to work in a fast-paced environment.

 

The Seed Production / Crop Advisor will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with seed and production team members to ensure the highest standards for safety, seed quality, and supply reliability.  Act as a first point of contact, develop relationships and provide general information to growers, recommending changes in practices or products that will improve production
  • Acreage allocations, contracting, field mapping, scouting, inspections and reporting for a large number of growers (DEKALB soybean and C&M Seeds Wheat)
  • Handle grower inquiries as they arise, and assist growers with documentation and administrative tasks
  • Ability to assess and recommend Best Management Practices to seed growers (planting, field and soil preparation, harvesting methods for weed, disease, insect control, storage and grain management).
  • Demonstrating knowledge of agricultural equipment. Recommending changes in use of agricultural products to improve production; providing consultation and recommendations utilizing current yield data.
  • Participate in marketing events, such as seminars and trade shows; Represent Devolder Farms in a manner consistent with the company’s ongoing commitment to corporate responsibility, community involvement and customer service.
  • Ensure conformance to ISO standards, CFIA regulations and CSGA production standards; Apply knowledge of the Ontario Health and Safety Act, Ontario Manufacturing and Farming Regulations on a daily basis in a changing working environment.

Terms of Employment:  Permanent; Full Time; Occasional evening or weekend work
Compensation/Benefits:  Competitive with Industry standards - to be commensurate with qualifications, experience and skill set.
Anticipated Start Date:  May 2017
Location:  Dover Centre; South-western Ontario
Education:  Post secondary education related to business/agriculture, or equivalent seed production and agronomy experience preferred; CCA accreditation would be considered an asset. Knowledge of ISO quality standards would be considered an asset. Farm Management experience an asset.  Knowledge of Precision Ag Equipment an asset.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:  Fast-paced environment; Work under pressure; tight deadlines; some driving, outside work and lifting required; Willingness to work extra hours and possibly weekends seasonally as required
Transportation:  Must have valid G driver’s licence and means of daily transportation; A or D license an asset
